Installation

Installation of the controller simply required fabricating mounts to hold the controller. A frame was constructed which profices a platform for mounting other components above the controller.

Instrumentation

There Seimens controller has over 150 different variables which can be displayed:
ID Symbol Description
116
IbrMax Maximum motor regen current
107
I_max Maximum motor drive current

Operating Temperature

The normal operating temperature for the Siemens units are as follows (from display):

  • Heatsink Temp (54 HS1_Tmp, 55 HS2_Tmp)
  • Motor Temp (56 Mot1_Tmp, 57 Mot2_Tmp)

The maximum values for the temperature are (from parameters:)

  • Heatsink Temp Limit (200 HS_Tmp_Lim) 75oC
  • Motor Temp (201 Mot_Tmp_Lim) 165oC
  • Motor Temp Emergency Power Off (208 Mot_Tmp_EPO) 200oC

The fan is controlled by the parameters:

  • Fan on temperature (415 Tmp_Fan_On) 35oC
  • Fan hysterisis (416 Mot_Fan_Hyst) 5oC (subtract this amount to determine fan off temperature)

    Programming Parameters

There are many programming options available for the Seimens Controller

    General Parameters

    Quantity Units Symbol
    106 n_Emerg_PowerOf
If this RPM is reached, the contactors open. Value cannot be changed. 12000
    106 n_epo_Restart
When motor RPM drops to this leve the contactors will close after EPO. Value cannot be changed. 1000

    Regen Parameters

    Quantity Units Symbol
    I_MotBrake
Off throttle maximum regen current. Cannot exceed IBrake_Max
    I_brake
Regen current when brake pedal applied. Cannot exceed IBrake_Max
    102 Iabs_Rated (locked)
    103
IabsMax Max motor drive or regen current. Used to protect the inverter. Decrease lineraly if temperature exceeds 200 HS_Tmp_Lim

    To use Switched Regen

Switched regen uses the brake light switch to activate a fixed regen amount. When the brake pedal is activated, an immediate on about of regen is felt. Here are the settings to activate switched regen:

  • 300 Mode_Selector set bit 3 to true
  • 365 I_BrakeMax leave at default - 200 Amps. This is the maximum amount of regen current the motor can generate.
  • 431 IBat_Max_Neg. Adjust this amount to deliver the desired amount of regen. Start with 10 Amps and adjust for brake pedal feel.

    Battery Pack Parameters

    Quantity Units Symbol
    430
Ibat_Max_Pos Maximum battery current during drive. Used to protect battery pack from too much current flowing out
    431
Ibat_Max_Neg Maximum battery current during regen. Set low to protect battery from overcharge.
    432
Ibat_Red_Pos Maximum battery current during drive when reduced power switch is active. Used to protect battery pack from too much current flowing out
    433
Ibat_Red_Neg Maximum battery current during regen when reduced power switch is active. Set low to protect battery from overcharge.
    420
Ubat_Undervolt If batteries drop below this voltage, the contactors will open to protect batteries.
    421
Ubat_Min If batteries drop below this voltage, I_Max is gradually decreased to prevent over discharging of the batteries.
    422
Ubat0_Min If batteries are below this voltage, the contactors will not close on start.
    423
Ubat0_Max If batteries are above this voltage, the contactors will not close on start.
    424
Ubat_Max When batteries are at this voltage, I_Brake is gradually reduced to prevent overcharging of the batteries during regen. Max 380V.
    425
Ubat0_Overvolt When batteries are above this voltage the contactors will open.
